How High's the Water, Mama?
mixed media encaustic on paper
8'x15"
2018

This work was created from two 26"x40" mixed media encaustic paintings on paper, one depicting the North Carolina Coastline from a historic map circa 1600, and the other from a modern aerial image of the same area.

Each painting was torn into 154 four inch squares and reconfigured, inviting the viewer to reimagine our every changing coastlines and to consider how our coastlines will be unrecognizable as sea levels continue to rise and our climate changes.

The squares are each four inches, indicating how much the seas have risen in this area since records began being kept. They are secured to the wall two inches apart using finishing nails commonly seen in house construction, representative of what residents are finding on the beaches after fierce storms destroy homes along the coastlines.
